How it Works & League Rules

WEEKLY ROLL CALL

Weekly Roll Call & Roster

  • Roll call is posted in the main WhatsApp group every Monday at 12:00 PM.
  • Full-time players have until Tuesday at 12:00 PM to confirm their availability. No exceptions.
  • If all 20 full-time players confirm, they will make up that week’s roster.
  • If fewer than 20 full-time players confirm, the remaining spots will be opened to players in the Substitution WhatsApp group.
  • Substitute players have until Tuesday at 1:00 PM to sign up. No exceptions.
  • Weekly captains will be selected once the 20-player roster is confirmed.

TEAMS/CAPTAINS/DRAFTS

Weekly Captains & Draft

  • Each week, four captains are selected by the organizers. Captains are chosen based on factors such as skill, size, stamina, and overall playing style, with the goal of creating a balanced group of captains and a competitive playing field.
  • Once the captains and weekly roster are confirmed, the organizers will randomly determine the draft order.
  • The draft follows a snake format. For example, the captain who picks last in Round 1 will pick first in Round 2.
  • Team selection order will be the reverse of the player draft order. The captain who has the last pick in the player draft will have the first choice of which team to represent that week.
  • The weekly draft takes place Wednesday at 9:00 PM in the WhatsApp group and typically takes no longer than 10 minutes. If you agree to be a captain, you must be available at that time to participate in the draft.
  • Draft results and selection order are kept private among the captains and organizers. Final team rosters will be announced in alphabetical order in the WhatsApp group on Wednesday night.
  • Once the draft is complete, players are locked into their teams and cannot be traded.
  • If a drafted player becomes unavailable at the last minute, a substitute player may be assigned to that team, subject to availability.

ROUND ROBIN

Game Format & On-Court Rules

Start Time & Schedule

  • All teams must be ready to take the court by 8:00 PM.
  • A weekly schedule will be provided showing each team’s game times and assigned courts.
  • There are four teams, with each team playing every other team twice for a total of six round-robin games per team.
  • At the end of the round robin, the two teams with the most points will advance to the Finals to determine that week’s champion.

Time Stoppage

  • The clock will run continuously during round-robin games, except during the final 30 seconds.
  • This rule is intended to prevent teams from using intentional fouls to run out the clock.

Fouls in the Final 10 Seconds

  • If a player is fouled with less than 10 seconds remaining in a round-robin game, the fouled player’s team will automatically receive a 7-second possession.
  • This rule is intended to discourage intentional fouling when little time remains.

Flagrant & Excessive Fouls

  • Any foul during a round-robin or Finals game that is considered flagrant or excessive may be reviewed by the Discipline Committee.
  • If the committee determines that the foul was excessive, the offending player will receive a 2 GN-point deduction.
  • More serious incidents may also result in a fine and/or suspension, as determined by the Discipline Committee.

Disputed Calls — “Shoot For It”

  • All foul and play calls should be respected. If players cannot agree on a call and the disagreement escalates, the “Shoot For It” rule will apply.
  • The defensive player disputing the call will take a three-point shot.
  • If the shot is made, the defensive team receives possession. If the shot is missed, possession remains with the other team.
  • The player disputing the call must take the three-point shot.
  • Video replay is not permitted. Players may not approach the person recording the games to request a replay or review of a call.

TEAMS/CAPTAINS/DRAFTS

Game Format, Playing Time & Scoring

Game Format

  • All games are played 4-on-4, with each team having one substitute player.
  • Team captains are responsible for managing substitutions and ensuring every player plays a minimum of 2 minutes per game.
  • Substitutions should be handled fairly so that all players receive reasonable playing time.
  • If a team is not following the playing-time requirements, opposing captains may address the issue with that team’s captain or bring it to league management.

Game Length

  • Games are a maximum of 10 minutes or until one team reaches 14 points, whichever comes first.
  • If neither team reaches 14 points, the team leading at the end of 10 minutes wins.
  • If the game is tied after 10 minutes, the game ends in a tie.
  • Games are strictly capped to ensure the full round-robin schedule and Finals can be completed within the allotted gym time.

Standings Points

  • Win: 2 points
  • Tie: 1 point per team
  • Loss: 0 points

Basket Scoring

  • Regular field goal: 2 points
  • Three-pointer: 3 points

Fouls & Sportsmanship

  • Fouls are called on the court and should be respected by both teams.
  • Hard fouls, repeated excessive fouling, or intentionally dirty play may be reviewed by league management.
  • Depending on the severity, disciplinary action may include warnings, suspension, and/or negative GN points.

Final Scores

  • At the end of each game, only the team captain is responsible for reporting the final score to the official scorekeepers.

TIE-BREAKER

Round-Robin Tiebreakers

If two or more teams are tied in the standings at the end of the round robin, the following tiebreakers will be applied in order to determine which team advances to the Finals:

  1. Total Wins – Team with the most wins.
  2. Head-to-Head Record – Results of the games played between the tied teams.
  3. Point Differential – Total points scored minus total points allowed.
  4. Points For – Team with the most total points scored.
  5. Points Against – Team with the fewest total points allowed.

FINALS

Finals Format & Rules

Game Format

  • The Finals are played in two 8-minute halves with no scoring limit.
  • Regular baskets are worth 2 points and three-pointers are worth 3 points.
  • The team with the most points at the end of regulation is crowned that week’s champion.
  • The clock will stop on dead balls, fouls, check balls, and out-of-bounds plays.

Starting Possession & Court Selection

  • The higher-seeded team may choose either:
    • First possession to start the game, or
    • Which side of the court they want to start on.
  • At halftime, teams will switch sides, and the team that did not start the first half with possession will start the second half with the ball.

Overtime & Sudden Death

  • If the game is tied after regulation, a 2-minute overtime will be played.
  • The higher-seeded team will receive the first possession of overtime.
  • If the game remains tied after overtime, the game moves to sudden death, with the first team to score winning the game.
  • The team that did not receive the first possession in overtime will receive the ball to start sudden death.

Timeouts

  • Each team is allowed one timeout during the Finals.
  • Following a timeout, the team with possession will advance the ball to the opposite side of the court and restart play with a check ball.

Coach’s Challenge / Video Review

  • Each team is allowed one coach’s challenge per Finals game.
  • When a challenge is called, the cameraman will review the available video footage and make the final ruling.
  • The cameraman’s decision following a video review is final and cannot be overturned.

Intentional Fouls — Final 60 Seconds

  • The intentional foul rule is available during the final 60 seconds when the game is within three possessions.
  • To intentionally foul, the defensive player must clearly call “foul” and make contact with/grab the player in possession of the ball.
  • Intentionally fouling a player without the ball will not stop the clock.
  • The fouled player receives two free throws, with each made free throw counting toward the score.
  • There is no rebounding on the free throws. After both attempts, possession is awarded to the opposing team.
  • Each team may use the intentional foul rule a maximum of three times during the final 60 seconds.

Disputed Calls — “Shoot For It”

  • There will be no designated game manager for the Finals.
  • The league’s “Shoot For It” rule applies during the Finals for disputed calls that cannot otherwise be resolved.
  • A coach’s challenge may still be used when available in accordance with the video review rules above.

Timeouts/Challenge: Each team will be allowed 1 timeout and 1 coach’s challenege (video review) per finals. After the timeout is called, the team will advance the ball to the other side and checkup the ball. During the coach’s challenge, camera man will review phone footage to determine the call. The final decision is made by the camera man and cannot be overturned by anyone else.

Close game: If the game is close in the final minute of the Finals (3 possession game or less) an intentional foul rule is in play and can be used. This is to avoid the winning team from dribbling out the clock. To intentionally foul, player must yell out foul and grab the player with the ball (you cannot intentionally foul a player without the ball – this will not stop the clock). The fouled player will be awarded 2 FT’s. Both FT’s are for points. The possession will change to the other team after the free throws. There is no rebounding. Intentional Foul can only be used max 3 times by a team and only in the last 60 seconds of the game.

The finals will no longer have a game manager. “Shoot for it” rule also applies in the finals.

GN POINTS

GN Points (Got Next Team Points)

  • GN Points are the league’s individual points system used to track player performance throughout the season.
  • Individual statistics are recorded during the Finals only, meaning only players on the two teams that advance to the Finals can earn statistical GN Points that week.
  • Players earn a set number of GN Points for reaching the Finals, with players on the championship team earning additional GN Points for winning.
  • The following Finals statistics count toward a player’s individual GN Points:
    • Points scored
    • Three-pointers made
    • Free throws made
    • Rebounds
    • Assists
    • Steals
    • Blocks
  • After each week, a summary of the Finals and updated cumulative GN Point standings will be posted for the league.
  • At the end of the season, the top 10 players in total GN Points will be named to the All-GN Team and qualify for the GN All-Star Game.
  • The All-Star Game will feature two teams of five, with the top two GN Point earners serving as team captains.

GN POINT SCORING

How GN Points Are Earned

Finals Scoring & Stat Tracking

  • Players on the 3rd-place team after the round robin will each receive 1 GN Point.
  • Each week, 2 of the 4 captains who are not competing in the Finals will be assigned to keep score and track statistics for one of the Finals teams.
  • The assigned captains are responsible for accurately recording each player’s:
    • Points
    • Three-pointers made
    • Assists
    • Rebounds
    • Steals
    • Blocks
  • These statistics will be used to calculate each player’s GN Points for the week.

DYNASTY TEAMS

Defending Champions & Dynasty Rule

  • Beginning in Week 2, each week will have a defending championship team from the previous week.
  • If at least 4 of the 5 defending champions return, the team will remain together for the following week and will not participate in the regular draft.
  • If one player from the championship team is unavailable, the team may draft a replacement. The replacement pick will be made in the same draft round/position as the unavailable player was originally selected.
  • In weeks where the defending champions remain together, only three captains will be selected and three new teams will be drafted.
  • If more than one player from the defending championship team is unavailable, the team will be broken up and all four teams will be redrafted.
  • This format is designed to give players the opportunity to play with different teammates throughout the 15-week season, while rewarding teams that continue to win together.
  • A defending championship team that wins three consecutive weekly championships will be crowned a Dynasty Team and receive additional GN Points.
  • Once a team achieves Dynasty status, the team must break up the following week, and all four teams will be reset and redrafted.

REPORTING ISSUES

Sportsmanship & League Conduct

  • The league is competitive, and we understand that emotions can sometimes run high during games. However, sportsmanship, respect, and brotherhood must always come first.
  • Players are expected to compete while maintaining the Islamic values and principles on which the league is built.
  • Excessive physical play, unnecessary hard fouls, disrespectful behaviour, or conflicts between players should be avoided.
  • If an issue occurs during a game, players should first speak with their team captain, who will attempt to resolve the situation or bring it to the attention of league organizers.
  • If you have a concern that needs to be addressed outside of the game, please contact the league organizers. The matter will be reviewed and appropriate action will be taken when necessary.
  • Regardless of the level of competition, maintaining respect and brotherhood among all players remains the league’s top priority.
